Uppermill Band emerged victorious in the second section at the recent Rochdale Contest.

It was a welcome return to the podium for the band under the direction of MD James Garlick.

Drawn fourth in the section, the band took to the stage with confidence and delivered an exciting and well-received rendition of Oliver Waespi’s challenging test piece, The Raid, leaving the stage both pleased with their performance and overjoyed with the win.

James Garlick said: ‘The Raid is known for its effects and impressive rhythmical and dynamic sequences. I was really impressed with how the band took on this challenging test piece and their work rate up to the contest. They delivered on the day, particularly highlighted by standout cadenzas from our principal cornet, flugelhorn, and Eb tuba players.’

Sarah Groarke-Booth’s remarks were thoughtful and constructive, offering valuable feedback to the band. This recognition of the band’s performance, paired with the victory, marks a significant achievement for the band after a busy year.

The band are looking forward to building on the momentum of this contest win with the next project involving recording work in the studio early November.
