Presidential Parping!

June 2nd saw Uppermill Band venture out into the villages of Saddleworth to take part in the annual Whit Friday brass band contests, joining ensembles from across Britain and from as far away as Australia in what is often called the Greatest Free Show On Earth. Playing the challenging President contest march, Uppermill competed at seven villages and were extremely pleased to be ranked 19th overall of the 70 bands who qualified (having competed at 6 or more villages in Saddleworth), despite 136 bands out on the circuit.  Individual highlights included a 9th place at Grotton and 10th at Diggle – beating some big name bands! – and two prizes for Best Saddleworth Band.

Proving that shared hobbies bring people together, Uppermill were delighted to welcome Ian Cooper into the trombone section for the road marches in each village. Ian flew all the way from Canada to fulfil a lifetime ambition to take part in Whit Friday and incidentally to celebrate his 33rd wedding anniversary with his wife Lisa. It was fantastic to meet Ian and Lisa and we hope they’ll come back!
