After an extraordinary 45 years of unwavering dedication, John Ward has officially retired from his position as Chairman of the Uppermill Brass Band. Since the bands formation in 1979, John has played an instrumental role in shaping the band’s journey, and his retirement marks the end of an era.
John’s involvement with Uppermill Brass Band spans beyond his leadership as Chairman. He has been a tireless supporter, a key figure in the band’s growth, and a true stalwart of the brass band community. His passion for brass music and his commitment to the band have made him a well-known and respected figure in the brass band world. Under his chairmanship, the band has flourished, achieving great successes on and off the stage.
A Legacy of Achievement
Over his tenure, John witnessed the evolution of the band, guiding it through periods of change and challenge. During this time, the band saw the arrival and departure of more than ten musical directors, each bringing unique talents to the fold, but John’s chairmanship provided the stability that allowed the band to thrive. A couple of the crowning achievements of John’s time as Chairman include achieving promotion to the 1st Section in 2013 and becoming 3rd section national champions in 2019.
John also played a pivotal role in the band’s growth behind the scenes, overseeing the construction and opening of a brand-new band room in 2007. Under John’s stewardship, the band also recorded a successful CD, preserving a chapter of its history for future generations.
A Changing of the Guard
As we enter 2025 and John officially steps down, he passes the baton to Steve Hall, who is taking over as Band Chairman. Steve has recently retired from his second baritone seat after 16 years of dedicated service, to devote his full energy to his new role of Chairman. John’s trust in Steve ensures the band is in capable hands and the future is looking bright.
A Bright Future
Today, the Uppermill Brass Band is in its strongest position in years, with James Garlick at the helm as Musical Director. Under James’ direction, the band has gone from strength to strength recently and there are some exciting concert plans for 2025 with announcements coming soon. Katie Woodward, band manager and John’s granddaughter told 4BR:
‘John’s contribution to Uppermill Brass Band cannot be overstated. His chairmanship has not only shaped the band’s growth but has also fostered a sense of team spirit and community that remains at the heart of the band today.’
Though John is retiring from his official duties he remains deeply connected to the Uppermill Brass Band family. He continues to be the band’s biggest supporter, attending rehearsals, concerts and events, and offering encouragement to the current generation of musicians.
John now assumes the role of honorary president of the band and, as he enters this new chapter, everyone at Uppermill Brass Band extends their deepest gratitude.
